Digital Calligraphy & Lettering

Digital calligraphy and lettering refers to a hand written title such as names for wedding invitations, book titles or single word messaging that I write by hand and convert to a digital file. This will allow you to scale and print numerous times across any element that you require for your function…Anything from stationery, napkins, signage, wedding veil, gifts and whatever you heart desires!

Rather than using a font, digitalizing calligraphy and hand-lettering will add a unique and individual style to your project.

A vectorised file is included in this service.

FAQs

How long does it take?

Please allow a minimum of one to two weeks to turn around your project. This of course depends on how much is involved in your particular project and what is already booked in- sometimes it can be less. Needless to say, the more time you can allow, the less stress there is. (If a fast overnight turnaround is required, an additional fee will be added).

How much does it cost?

Different projects will attract different fees. It depends on the complexity of the project; how many words, how many lines and what type of script is being used. A single name on a name tag will start at $3. Please note: there is a $50 minimum charge on all orders. Please get in contact with your project details for quote.

What is your process?

Whether you have an entire page of writing or just a few words, the process is the same. A draft, and in some cases two or three drafts will always be done to ensure the script suits the style of the occasion. In the case of flourished calligraphy, I aim for no untidy clashes . A suitable draft will be photographed and text to you to sign off. Once I put pen to paper, especially for a book inscription, it is one shot, so I like to be sure of exactly what we are doing!

Isn’t calligraphy just fancy writing?

The urban myth that pops up from time to time. No, it is not. Calligraphy is “the art of beautiful writing”. It is a skilled art form that does require years of practice, dedication and refinement to feel confident in producing quality work. I practice daily, just as a musician would, to ensure that my skill level is the best it can be.

About the materials I use

For most of my calligraphy, I generally use gouache paint, watered down to an ink consistency. This helps with colour selection and ensures that no bleeding will occur - as some inks are prone to do on various papers. In regards to paper and the nib; there are some types of paper that are difficult to use. Heavy textured papers are difficult for the pointed pen, which most of my work is. This is because the nib can quite often get caught in the fibres of the paper. It also makes for slow work, as the texture often inhibits the flow of the ink and therfore the letters. Another “no go” is paper that is coated or shiny. Both present a difficulty with the ink unable to take to the paper. Ideally, get in contact with me. If you have sample papers and an idea of what you are wanting to achieve, I can see if we can make it work! One final point, make sure you have extras. This always helps with colour testing, bleed, mistakes (yes they do happen) and the extra guest.

Please note: All inks and paint I use (watercolour or gouache) are water soluable.

Can you do postal orders?

Yes I can! We will need to super organised with our timing. Please note: Express post or courier costs will be at your arrangement.
